Wipe the pipes every few months

Balcony dust mixes with monsoon damp and leaves marks on the pipes that can transfer to light-coloured clothes. A damp cloth followed by a dry wipe is enough — avoid abrasive scrubbers on powder-coated surfaces.

Keep the rope clean and dry

Rinse dust off the pull ropes occasionally and let them dry fully. Do not tie knots at the pulley end to shorten a line; it puts uneven strain on the mechanism.

Lower and raise every line regularly

Lines that stay parked for months can stiffen. Cycling each one now and then keeps the pulleys free-running.

Spread the load

Distribute heavy items across lines rather than piling bedsheets on one. Even loading keeps the pipes straight and the drying faster.

Watch for early warning signs

• A line that pulls harder than the others — usually a pulley needing attention
• Visible fraying on a rope — replace before it snaps
• Any bracket movement at the ceiling — stop using that line and call for a check
